What does Hyperfixation mean?
Attention locked on an object, topic or person until the rest of the world loses volume.
Definition
Hyperfixation is the word ADHD and autism communities use for the dive: a game, an artist, a work problem, a crush. It is not the same as a hobby. There is urgency, lost hours, irritation when someone interrupts. It can be productive and it can be a trap. Special interest, in autistic vocabulary, is a close relative with a different cut.
Origin
English hyperfixation, neurodivergence speech on the 2010s–2020s internet.
History
From Tumblr and Reddit to ADHD TikTok. The word left the community's informal clinic.
How it emerged
A name was missing for focus that is neither laziness nor virtue, but a temporary captivity.
