What does Hyperfixation mean?
Attention locked on a topic, task or person until the rest of the world loses volume — hours vanish.
Definition
Hyperfixation is the word ADHD communities (and autism communities too) use for the dive: a game, an album, a work bug, a crush. There is urgency, lost time, irritation when someone interrupts.
The older cousin in ADHD research is hyperfocus: the dive into the task in front of you. Special interest, in autistic vocabulary, is another cut — a stable interest, sometimes years long, that anchors identity. Hyperfixation can be a days-or-weeks spike on top of that, or on anything new.
Origin
English joins hyper to fixation. Older papers already used hyperfixation beside autism, in the sense of intense interest. In 2015 Tumblr — blogs such as Actually ADHD — proposed the word as an umbrella: ADHD speech could name the dive without taking special interest, a word from autistic scenes.
History
From Tumblr and Reddit the name reached adult ADHD TikTok. Part of the feed treats hyperfixation as a short spike and special interest as a long passion; another part uses both the same day, especially in AuDHD. Hyperfocus stayed the name of the task-dive; hyperfixation, the name of the topic that eats the week.
How it emerged
A name was missing for focus that is neither discipline nor laziness: the brain locks onto the object. Special interest already covered the long autistic tie; the ADHD spike wanted another plate.
