Definition

JOI stands for jerk-off instruction (sometimes jerk-off instructions). It names an adult genre: a performer speaks to the camera, into a mic, or in writing, and directs the viewer's masturbation. It is not a sexual orientation and not a label for the person watching. It is the name of the clip, the audio or the script.

What marks the genre is address. Instead of showing sex between other people, the piece treats the viewer as the target: pace, pause, a countdown, praise or refusal. A lot of JOI arrives in a dominant voice; some of it is closer to encouragement (occasionally tagged JOE, jerk-off encouragement). The same tag also collects edging and, in other titles, humiliation. CEI (cum eating instruction) is a relative: the instructions continue after orgasm.

The same letters also name JOI AI, a chatbot. That is a different thing. In this sense the acronym is the erotic genre.

English. Jack-off instructions shows up around 2000; jerk-off instructions at least from 2008. The short tag JOI stuck on tube sites and clip stores.

History

The format existed as amateur clips and fetish commissions before it had its own shelf. In the 2010s the acronym fit a title. Later, creators on clip stores and direct-to-fan platforms treated JOI as a niche: it does not require filmed sex with a partner; it requires a voice and someone on the other side of the screen.

There was no short name for content that does not show someone else's act — it directs the act of the person watching.
