What does SSC mean?
Acronym for safe, sane, consensual: the classic ethical triad of the BDSM scene.
Descriptive text. Not a how-to and not erotic content.
Definition
SSC was the slogan many communities used to present themselves to the world: safe, sane, consensual. The triad tries to separate play from abuse. Critics say safe and sane are vague and that real risk vanishes on the poster. RACK is born from that critique. Even so SSC is still the doorway in introductory texts.
Origin
English, attributed to David Stein and the TES group in New York, 1980s.
History
From local meetings to internet FAQs. The triad became the subculture's visiting card.
How it emerged
The scene needed three adjectives that fit a leaflet.
Usage examples
The group still teaches SSC to newcomers.
SSC does not describe risk; it describes intent.
