Slang
What does Brainrot mean?
Slang for the hangover of thin content — and for the content itself: a head (or a feed) full of short video, memes and citations that will not leave.
Definition
Brainrot (also brain rot, two words) names two things at once. One is the material: short-form clips, low-effort memes, an audio that sticks. The other is the effect people describe after hours of it — speech coming out as citation, a reference where a sentence used to be. Oxford in 2024 defined the “supposed” mental deterioration from overconsuming trivial content; the same generation that makes the clip uses the word with irony, not as a report.
On TikTok it became a pack label: Skibidi Toilet, “only in Ohio”, then 2025’s Italian brainrot (AI animals with fake Italian names and a synthetic voice). “That’s brainrot” points at the genre. “I’m in brainrot” points at the hangover.
Origin
English brain + rot. Henry David Thoreau wrote brain-rot in Walden (1854), blaming the intellectual laziness of his day, next to potato rot. The internet reused the picture for thin media and, in the 2020s, for the Reels and TikTok loop.
History
Gen Z and Gen Alpha stuck the term to the feed. In December 2024 Oxford University Press named brain rot Word of the Year (usage up 230% on 2023). In 2025 Italian brainrot became the visible pack. Papers still write two words; comments often write one.
How it emerged
There needed to be a nickname for scroll hangover and for the junk that causes it, in the same breath.

Questions
What is brainrot?
Informal name for thin network content (short video, meme, sticky audio) and for the taken-over-head feeling after too much of it. Oxford logged both faces: the cause and the effect.
Is brainrot an illness?
It is slang, not a clinical code. Oxford calls the deterioration “supposed”. Problematic screen use can be real distress; the meme name does not close a diagnosis or replace a conversation with a professional.
Why did Oxford pick brain rot in 2024?
The press saw the term spike (+230% from 2023 to 2024) as the way to name worry about a low-density feed. It won a public vote plus lexicographic analysis; rizz had been the 2023 word.
What is Italian brainrot?
A 2025 meme pack: AI creatures (animal mixed with object), invented Italian names and synthetic narration. It is a genre of the content the word points at — the shark in sneakers, the cappuccino ballerina — not a second disease.
Are brainrot and brain rot the same?
Yes. Oxford writes two words; TikTok and comments often glue them into one. Same slang either way.
