What does Brainrot mean?
Slang for the hangover of thin content — and for the content itself: a head (or a feed) full of short video, memes and citations that will not leave.
Definition
Brainrot (also brain rot, two words) names the hangover after hours of thin clips: speech coming out as citation, a reference where a sentence used to be, a head or a feed full of short video, memes and an audio that will not leave. Oxford in 2024 defined the “supposed” mental deterioration from overconsuming trivial content; the same generation that makes the clip uses the word with irony, as feed hangover.
The same name became a pack label. On TikTok the visible bundle was Skibidi Toilet and the refrain only in Ohio; then 2025 brought Italian brainrot, AI animals with fake Italian names and a synthetic voice. “That’s brainrot” points at the genre. “I’m in brainrot” points at the hangover.
Origin
In English it is brain + rot, and the picture is old. Henry David Thoreau wrote brain-rot in Walden (1854), next to potato rot: “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot, will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?” On Twitter, @IzzyNeis (25 June 2007) called reality dating shows brain rot; @carrissa (23 August 2007) used it for hanging out online. The internet reused the picture for thin media and, in the 2020s, for the Reels and TikTok loop.
History
Use grew through the 2010s and became a meme around 2020 on Discord and TikTok, still with packs like Skibidi Toilet and “only in Ohio.” In December 2024 Oxford University Press named brain rot Word of the Year: more than 37,000 votes and usage up 230% on 2023; rizz had been the 2023 word. In January 2025 Italian brainrot — the shark in sneakers, an Italian AI voice — became the visible pack. Papers still write two words; comments often write one.
How it emerged
The generation that makes the clip needed a nickname, in the same breath, for scroll hangover and for the junk that causes it. They used the word with irony; Oxford logged both faces — the material and the effect — and the feed stuck.
