What does E-girl mean?
A camera aesthetic: stripe blush, a heart on the cheek, fringe, a pack born on Discord and TikTok.
Definition
E-girl (and e-boy) is a platform look. It takes emo, anime, mall goth and delivers them to the close-up. There is irony and there is image labour. The term was also used to insult people who perform on stream. Like every feed tribe, it ages fast and returns in cycles. It is not a personality diagnosis.
Origin
English electronic girl, 4chan/Discord then TikTok around 2018–2020.
History
From a pejorative meme to a makeup tutorial. Two-stripe blush became a hieroglyph.
How it emerged
Streaming needed a visual type as readable as a filter.
Usage examples
E-girl is a camera pack, not a soul.
The heart on the cheek was born already cited.
