ICYMI is timeline courtesy. It opens the retweet, the briefing, the still on yesterday — politer than how did you not see this. In digital journalism it became a headline and newsletter tic. It fit Twitter’s 2010s character limit. The amendment ETA marks what was born later in the same text; ICYMI marks a replay for people who arrived late to the feed.
Origin
English in case you missed it. It fit Twitter’s 140-character limit until November 2017, when the cap became 280. 2010s newsletters and digital headlines stuck the acronym in the subject line and the title, as replay courtesy.
History
From the newsroom that retweeted itself the note moved to the briefing that recovers yesterday. ETA marks an amendment in the text; ICYMI marks a replay for people who arrived late to the feed.
How it emerged
The infinite feed does not wait. An in case you missed it that fit the 140-character limit and the email subject was missing.
