What does IMO mean?
In my opinion: a three-letter cushion before the take, sometimes sincere, sometimes fake humility.
Definition
IMO flags that a guess is coming, not a fact: in my opinion, and the reader can already discount it. The cousin with an H, IMHO, adds humble — in my humble opinion. Some people read honest instead of humble; the classic sense in the hacker glossary is humble. The joke variants IMNSHO (not-so-humble) and IMAO (arrogant) mock the stamp itself.
Origin
English from Usenet and email. The OED points to IMHO on 23 February 1984, on net.video (Re: Info wanted on Beta Tapes), expanded there as in my honest opinion. A 1986 PC Magazine glossary already lists IMHO. The Jargon File (12 June 1990) locks in humble and the path from SF fandom to Usenet; IMO is the shorter cousin, without the H.
History
From 1980s forums the stamp moved to email, IRC and WhatsApp, where it still appears mid-sentence. IMNSHO and IMAO became jokes on the cushion itself: the acronym promises humility and often just flags that a judgement is coming.
How it emerged
The internet needed an opinion stamp in three or four letters. The full phrase burned the modem; IMO and IMHO fit before the take.
