What does NGL mean?
Not gonna lie: a candour preface, cousin to TBH, with tweet rhythm.
Definition
NGL opens the sentence the person was already going to say. It can soften a compliment (“ngl you ate”) or a cut. TBH (to be honest) is the older cousin; no cap is another “I mean it” stamp. The acronym often arrives raw. The stamp does not prove the fact.
The NGL app (anonymous questions, 2021) is another product with the same three letters. The Instagram box asks for an anonymous note; the tweet preface asks for tone. Same spelling, uses that do not touch.
Origin
English not gonna lie — the spoken phrase is older than the net. The acronym shows up on its own on Urban Dictionary in January 2009. Green’s Dictionary uses that date. Google Trends rises around 2009–10, in the SMS and 140-character Twitter years.
History
From text and tweets the preface moved to Reddit and a WhatsApp voice note transcribed with ngl at the start. The meme they had us in the first half, not gonna lie (Apollos Hester) reheated the search. The NGL app, in 2021, mixed the letters with an anonymous question box on Instagram — another use, same spelling.
How it emerged
TBH already existed; the next generation wanted another three-letter breath. Not gonna lie sat badly on a numeric keypad; ngl fits at the start of the line and flags the tone.

Starting with ngl does not make the sentence true.
