What does NSFW mean?
Not safe for work: a warning that the link should not open on a work monitor — sex, gore, nudity, heavy swearing.
Definition
NSFW marks the context of the click. What follows may be porn, graphic violence, or a meme HR will not forgive. The sibling SFW (safe for work) says the opposite: fine on a desk. NSFL (not safe for life) raises the tone, usually gore, death, an image you do not want to carry. A title without the warning, when the content needs it, is a forum miss.
Origin
English not safe for work (also not suitable for work). On rumor boards around 1998–2000, NFBSK — not for British school kids — tagged filthy files; the short form NSFW won. The OED cites 2002; Urban Dictionary defined it on 12 September 2003.
History
From a thread title the stamp became a Reddit, X and app filter. Oxford Dictionaries Online logged it in 2011; Merriam-Webster in 2015. In June 2023 Reddit mods marked SFW communities NSFW in protest: the label became a platform lever, not only thread etiquette.
How it emerged
The office with a visible monitor needed three letters before the click. Without the warning, a colleague saw what the title hid; NSFW flags the context of what will open.
