What does Body doubling mean?

Working beside someone — or a presence on a screen — so the start of the task happens.

Definition

Body doubling is a social crutch for executive dysfunction: the other person does not do the work, they only exist in the space. It can be a friend on Zoom, a study-with-me live, a library. The shame of being seen stuck becomes an engine. The word takes the trick out of laziness and puts it in regulation.

Origin

English from ADHD communities, 2010s–2020s.

History

From the forum to study-with-me YouTube. The pandemic turned the body double into a product.

How it emerged

A name was missing for the miracle of starting because someone is in the room.

Usage examples

  • Body doubling is not moral supervision; it is presence.
