What does Love bombing mean?
A flood of praise, gifts and “us” too soon — affection used to speed attachment and occupy judgement.
Definition
Love bombing is too much volume, too soon: gifts, declarations, a life plan in the first week.
In abuse writing the pattern is the idealisation phase. Then comes the pullback, the critique, the silence. What counts is the sum: haste, excess and control afterwards.
An intense weekend, if the pullback never comes, can just be rushed passion.
Origin
The name joins English love and bombing. The Unification Church (Moon, the “Moonies”) used the label in the 1970s for a flood of attention on a recruit; The Family International did too. The OED cites 1976 in J. Bjornstad, The Moon is not the Son. Margaret Singer described the ploy in Cults in Our Midst (1996).
History
From the sect the word moved into abusive-relationship speech in the 2010s. Dale Archer and the press tied the pattern to dating and narcissism; the New York Times in 2022 and TikTok in 2023 swelled the search. The word widened: sometimes it only names an intense start, and then it loses its teeth.
How it emerged
A name was missing for affection that works as occupation: fill, then pull. Cult recruitment already had the gesture; dating took the label when WhatsApp let a 3 a.m. flood fit in a pocket.
