What does Breadcrumbing mean?
Keeping someone hooked with crumbs of attention — a like, a cold DM, an emoji on a story — with no intention of taking the next step.
Definition
Breadcrumbing is the gerund of breadcrumb: tiny, irregular doses of flirt or care so the other person does not switch off, while the date, the label or the plan never arrives. The channel stays open; the next step does not. The logic is intermittent reinforcement — the slot-machine pattern psychologist Raúl Navarro describes: a prize now, silence later, so waiting does not end.
In the tale, Hansel and Gretel leave crumbs to find the way home. In dating, the crumbs mark a path that does not arrive. It can be calculated or careless; the effect on the other person is the same: rationed hope. It also shows up in friendship and at work, but public speech was born in app and social-media flirt.
Origin
The word comes from English breadcrumb. The gerund and the nickname Hansel and Gretelling come from the Grimm tale in which the children leave crumbs to find the way home. In dating the trail does not arrive. Jessica Bennett, in the New York Times of 10 July 2016 (“The Agony of the Digital Tease”), took the name into lifestyle press. Urban Dictionary already listed the gerund in the 2010s, with no single invention date.
History
Dating glossaries and behaviour lists locked the term in after 2016. In 2020 Raúl Navarro and colleagues in Spain found that a little more than three in ten young adults (18–40) had experienced or started breadcrumbing in the previous year. Apps made it cheap to keep several crumb trails at once.
Beside that drip sit ghosting, which cuts the signal at once, and benching, which keeps someone on the reserve bench. The crumb is the drip that blocks mourning.
How it emerged
A name was needed for the almost-contact that blocks mourning: neither an ending nor a start. The tale already had the trail; the app made an irregular like cheap enough to need a label.
