What does Orbiting mean?
Leaving the conversation and still circling in the digital orbit: likes, views, stories, no speech.
Definition
Orbiting is the ghost who still watches. After the cut, the person stays in the metrics and does not reopen talk: a like on a post, a story view, an open profile.
Ghosting cuts speech; the orbit leaves the like without a landing. Haunting stresses the later visit — the watched story that comes back.
When the person actually types again, the slang shifts to zombieing: a hi that reopens the thread.
Origin
The word comes from English orbit. Anna Iovine coined the gerund in Man Repeller in April 2018, with colleague Kara: close enough to see each other; far enough to never talk. The New York Times, on 8 December 2018 (“Orbiting, Another Thing for Online Daters to Worry About”), took the name to a wider public. A November 2017 YouTube clip already used orbiting in a slightly different sense; the Times noted that caveat.
History
From breakup essays on Instagram the gerund moved into dating lists. Anyone who had already been ghosted recognised the mute like: speech had ended, the orbit had not. Haunting stresses the later visit after the cut; zombieing is the hi that reopens the thread. Portuguese and Spanish often keep the English.
How it emerged
A name was missing for the ex who does not speak and does not leave the view count. Orbit already described gravity without landing; the feed gave the mute like and Man Repeller glued the gerund.
Usage examples
He ghosted and stayed in orbit on stories.
