Definition
Haunting is the ghost in the shop window: the person left the chat and stays in the metrics. In 2017 Cosmopolitan and Mashable glued the gerund onto ghosting’s wake — a like, a watched story, sometimes without even following. The gesture is the visit after the conversation’s burial.
Searchers who want the same disappearance find neighbouring stages. Orbiting can be the ongoing gravity: silently following the whole time, not only after the cut. Zombieing is when the dead send a hi and the chat comes back. Stalking leaves the shop window and becomes pursuit that frightens; haunting’s presence, in dating use, still stops at a like.
Origin
English haunt, an echo of ghost. Dating columns in 2017 — Cosmopolitan (cited on 21 April) and Mashable — took the gerund onto “new ghosting” lists. The gesture is old; the label stuck when Instagram and Snapchat made the visit visible.
History
From ghosting as a verb came a vocabulary of disappearance stages. Bustle and SELF repeated the contrast: the like after the silence. Orbiting, which Iovine named in 2018, became the ongoing gravity; haunting stayed the later visit after the chat burial.
How it emerged
Disappearance needed a name for the stage in which the person still watches. Ghost was already the cut; haunting named the like that comes back after.
