What does Zombieing mean?
Coming back from ghosting as if the death had not happened: a hi after the silence.
Definition
Zombieing is a return without mourning. The one who vanished reappears with a shallow hi, without explaining the burial. The other person decides whether to reply.
Breadcrumbing still feeds whoever never left. Orbiting and haunting stay in the feed without speech. The zombie sends a message and reopens the thread.
Reconciliation needs a talk about the disappearance; the ping alone only tests whether the thread still answers.
Origin
The metaphor comes from English zombie, the walking dead. Sophia Kercher described the gerund in PrimeMind in 2016: the ghost who comes back with a shallow hi. Miranda Larbi, in Metro on 23 March 2017, then Evening Standard and Elite Daily, took the cycle into British columns. The gesture is old; the label stuck on the app after ghosting peaked.
History
From 2016–17 columns the cycle moved onto dating lists of the decade. After ghosting — the burial — zombieing is the chat relapse. Anyone who stayed in the like calls that orbiting; anyone who comes back to the story, haunting. Portuguese and Spanish often keep the English, sometimes with zumbi / zombi.
How it emerged
Ghosting needed a name for the relapse. Zombies already walked back from burial in pop culture; dating used the same picture for a hi after months of silence.
