What does Benching mean?
Leaving someone on the bench: minimum contact while waiting for a better starter.
Definition
Benching takes the sports reserve bench. The person gets enough practice not to request a transfer — a message, a spaced date — and never the shirt.
Beside the bench sits breadcrumbing, the crumb that can be only an ego habit. The bench is squad management: a starter is expected.
Another neighbouring scene is cushioning, which builds a pillow under a bond that still exists. Here the other person is already on the bench. Leaving the bench means ending it, not waiting to be called up.
Origin
The metaphor comes from English bench, the team’s sideline. Jason Chen published “‘Benching’ Is the New Ghosting” in New York Magazine / The Cut on 9 June 2016. HuffPost (19 July 2016) and Teen Vogue repeated the metaphor that season. Leading someone on is old; the app gerund stuck in 2016.
History
From dating Twitter the term moved into mid-2010s dating lists. After 2020 it returns in “reopening” columns post-lockdown. Apps made the squad visible: a text every two weeks costs almost nothing and holds the seat.
How it emerged
The app made the squad visible; the bench needed a name. A starter’s shirt already existed in sport; dating took the bench for whoever never takes the field.
