What does Situationship mean?
A bond with couple routine and no couple name — jealousy, overnights, “we,” no sign.
Definition
Situationship is situation plus relationship. There is dating practice and a refusal of a label. Casual seeing can be one-off; here there is continuity: the same people, the same “we.”
The earlier corridor is usually the talking stage, still mostly thread, without a couple routine. For some a situationship is freedom. For others it is an oral contract only one party read.
Origin
The name joins English situation and relationship. Urban Dictionary logged it on 23 January 2006 (no1slogo): then “a problematic relationship with unresolved conflict, usually confused with dating.” The current sense — more than friendship, less than a named romance — settled later.
History
Blogs were using the word by the late 2000s; The Source in April 2015; Cosmopolitan in May 2017 (Carina Hsieh). English search rose in late 2020; 2022 is a Google peak. Snoh Aalegra has the track Situationship. Merriam-Webster added it in 2023. TikTok’s #situationship became a Gen Z complaint file.
How it emerged
A noun was missing for the dating that will not admit it is dating. FWB arrives with a sex-between-friends sign; talking stage is still a thread. Situationship names the house with no plate on the door.
