A phase of messages and dates with no couple name and no exclusivity deal — still the thread, not the house.
Definition
Talking stage is the corridor: daily chat, maybe a kiss, no title. We're talking / just talking became an informal status. The calendar does not come with it.
Neighbour to the situationship, it is usually earlier — there is not yet a couple routine. Ghosting loves this corridor: nobody made anything official enough to be billed.
Origin
The name joins English talking and stage. The gerund just talking was already circulating on campus and in Google Trends from September 2008. Talking stage stuck in young US speech (many people tie it to AAVE and Black Twitter; the exact chain is not closed). Urban Dictionary and high-school columns describe the label by at least 2016.
History
The app stretched flirtation: match, text, pandemic teledate. Glamour and Hinge treated the talking stage as Gen Z limbo. TikTok globalised the complaint of people stuck on the thread for months. DTR (define the relationship) is the talk that leaves the corridor — or blows it up.
How it emerged
A name was missing for almost-dating that is still only messages. Old courting asked for a date; chat asked for a status. We're talking became informal civil status with no term.
