Definition

BDSM communities gave a name to what comes next. After power exchange, impact or a hard drop into trust, adrenaline and endorphins fall; the body cools. The agreement covers that landing — water, warmth, quiet, talk, checking marks, or time alone, whatever was asked for beforehand. For a lot of the scene it sits next to the safeword.

The crash after the peak has a name — drop. Sub drop in the receiving role; top drop or dom drop in the person who ran the scene. It can hit at once or a day or two later, with emptiness, irritation, guilt, cold. The person who ran the scene lands too. Outside kink the same word now names care after “vanilla” sex. In English aftercare is still, in another room, follow-up after surgery or a social-service placement — search mixes the two. There is also postcoital dysphoria (PCD), a mood crash after sex, with or without kink. Schweitzer and colleagues, in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (2015), found 46% of women and 41% of men reported it at least once.

Origin

English after + care. The hospital sense — follow-up after treatment — is older. The erotic sense settles in leather and BDSM late in the twentieth century, beside SSC (safe, sane, consensual) and the safeword. Jay Wiseman taught aftercare in SM 101 (1st ed. 1992; Greenery Press, 1996): the after of the scene, not the after of the ward.

History

Handbooks and workshops taught aftercare next to the scene agreement. Men’s Health (2019), The Cut (17 May 2024) and ABC carried the word to people who had never been to a fetish night.

How it emerged

The scene had a peak. It needed a name for the landing, when the body had not come down yet. Care after sex already existed without a label; BDSM gave the noun that columns and apps later took.
