Definition

An open relationship usually keeps a we and authorises sex with others. It is not polyamory by default: the third person may have no partner status. The rules — overnight, tell, don't tell, veto — are the real text. Without text, open becomes a euphemism for cheating. ENM is the family; this is the most visible branch in ordinary speech.
