Slang
What does Aura mean?
In slang, someone’s charisma and presence treated as a scoreboard: aura means cool; losing aura means the scene just tripped you.
Definition
Aura here is the cool factor — confidence, style, the sense that the room shifted when they walked in. Comments turned it into a video-game number: +1000 aura, −5000 aura, lost aura. Nobody keeps a real tally; the figure only marks whether a gesture raised or dropped the prestige in the moment. Aura farming is doing something on purpose to bank those points, the way you farm XP in a game. When the effort shows, the effect reverses.
In esoteric talk the same word still names the energy field around a body. The meme borrows the picture and swaps aura colour for an ironic score. In 2020 the New York Times wrote that Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk had an aura that was “priceless”; football Twitter ran with it. Point-scoring went viral on TikTok in 2024; in 2025 an Indonesian boy dancing on the prow of a festival boat became the global face of aura farming.
Origin
Old word (breeze, then energy field). The sports sense of intimidating presence takes off after the NYT van Dijk piece (2020). Farming comes from MMO English: repeat an action to gather a resource. Portuguese search often arrives as farmar aura; Spanish as farmear aura.
History
Player compilations and anime edits (the character stands still, the aura rises) made the term sofa sport. Langenscheidt voted Aura Germany’s Jugendwort 2024. Merriam-Webster logged the slang. The Indonesian boat clip (2025) pushed farming from meme to playground.
How it emerged
A way of talking about presence got meme arithmetic.

He gained aura just by not answering.
Lost aura on the handshake.

Questions
What does aura mean in this slang?
Charisma and presence treated as a scoreboard: someone with aura looks sure and cool; a clumsy gesture “loses aura.” The number (+1000, −2000) is comment-section play, not a test.
What is aura farming?
In games, to farm is to repeat an action for loot or XP. Aura farming is posing, staying quiet, hitting a play or a look on purpose to seem more interesting. If the calculation shows, the crowd docks you.
Is aura the same as rizz?
Rizz is flirting charm — the game, the pickup. Aura is wider: presence in any scene, from a goal to a hallway. You can have aura without flirting; you can have rizz without stage presence.
Is this the spiritual aura?
In esoteric speech, an aura is the luminous field around a body, with colour and mood. In network slang the word became a comic metric of social image. The rest of the sentence tells you which one is in play.
Are aura points real?
There is no official board. +1000 and −10,000 are how a clip gets scored, like meme XP. TikTok popularised the format in 2024; the number only translates the crowd’s reaction.
