What does Rizz mean?
Flirting game: the short charm — open a conversation, turn the tone, the other person yields.
Definition
Rizz, in Kai Cenat’s circle (Twitch, around May 2021, with Silky and Duke Dennis), was game: to rizz someone. Cenat has said that for the group it was not a clip of charisma; the folk etymology — the middle syllable — stuck anyway. The “how to have rizz” tutorial came after the roasting use.
On TikTok in 2022 the same game became a scoreboard. Unspoken rizz is the charm that needs no line; W rizz and L rizz mark whether the game landed or missed. On 4 December 2023 Oxford University Press named rizz word of the year.
Origin
In-group English (Bronx / stream). Cenat popularised it on Twitch e-dates in May 2021; on 11 June he tweets “who really got RIZZ.” Urban Dictionary logs it on 1 June 2021, citing the stream. Complex (17 July 2023): “rizz just meant game,” not short for charisma.
History
From the e-date call the word moved to unspoken-rizz TikTok and the playground. In 2022 it leaks into global youth English. On 4 December 2023 Oxford University Press beat Swiftie, situationship and de-influencing for word of the year (a poll of ~32,000 readers).
How it emerged
Game already existed; a new syllable sold the same flirt to the story. W and L became a charm scoreboard; unspoken rizz names the charm that needs no line.
Usage examples
He has too much rizz on that call.
L rizz: sent good morning in DMs at seven.
