What does Simp mean?
Someone who lowers themselves or overspends for romantic attention — usually unreturned — and becomes the joke.
Definition
Simp measures asymmetry: gifts, public defence, a queue for a like, interest that does not come back. It can be a joke among friends or a weapon against any visible kindness. Rap and TikTok aimed it at men; use already crosses genders when someone “serves” too hard.
The fake acronym SIMP (“suckers idolizing…”) is later folklore, a way of pretending the word was always an initialism. The gerund simping stuck for paying dinner again. People who mix the two insults sometimes land on stan: there the excess is fandom; here the bill is still dinner.
Origin
In English it is a clip of simpleton. The New Partridge traces the noun to the early twentieth century; The New York Times already prints simp in 1923. In West Coast rap the sense turns “too soft with women,” the other pole from pimp: Too Short from 1985, Ice-T 1987, Sir Mix-a-Lot 1992, 2Pac 1995, Three 6 Mafia 1999.
History
Manosphere and MGTOW forums in the 2010s recycled the insult for the man who “serves” too hard. In 2013 YouTube (DJ Akademics) already mocked Drake as king of simps. In December 2019 the TikTok Simp Nation (@pollo.boyy) spread the trend; Twitch and Twitter copied it.
How it emerged
A short insult was missing for interest that turns into a queue and gifts with nothing back — and, on the other side, a slap at any visible care. Simp fits both.
