What does Chopped mean?
An appearance verdict: ugly, unflattering, off the frame — the person, the photo or the fit.
Definition
Chopped is the past participle of chop: in young English, especially African American English on the East Coast (New York, New Jersey), it became a stamp for looks. Ugly, unflattering, did not make the cut. It covers a face, a haircut, an angle, an outfit. Mid is forgettable average; chopped sits below that, with the air of a sentence. You can laugh at yourself (“I’m chopped today”) and you can hurt someone in a stranger’s comments. Cooked is situational ruin; chopped aims at the look.
The same participle branches. A choppelganger is the worse lookalike: the face that resembles yours, only below the cut. Optionally chopped is the two-shot glow-up — no makeup first, then the pose. Searchers who want the show land on Food Network Chopped, the reality contest where a chef is cut from the game; searchers who want music land on chopped and screwed, Houston’s slow remix, from DJ Screw. On TikTok, the face stamp is the sense that exploded.
Origin
English chop, to cut. Appearance slang in African American English; glossaries point to NY/NJ. Urban Dictionary (R.Lavish, 16 December 2014) logged “ugly”: Bro, she chopped. Spoken use is older; the dictionary did not invent the insult.
History
From photo comments the adjective climbed onto TikTok. In late 2024 and early 2025 the Chopped Chin meme — Angel Wiley courtside at a WNBA game, recut into Reels — scaled the adjective without inventing it. The New York Times (13 August 2025) covered Gen Alpha use. Merriam-Webster logged the slang sense unattractive.
How it emerged
Ugly already existed. A short feed stamp was missing for the photo that did not make it. To chop was already to cut from the game; young English glued the participle onto the face and the fit.
