What does Looksmaxxing mean?
A routine of optimising appearance — from skin to surgery — spoken as a game grind.
Definition
Looksmaxxing joins looks and maxing: max the visual stat as if the face were an RPG attribute. The name started on appearance forums in the incel orbit in the 2010s — Lookism.net and the PSL circuit (PUAHate, Sluthate, Lookism) — where the grind became a routine with a game name.
In that circuit the effort splits. Softmaxxing covers skincare, a haircut, the gym, angles. Hardmaxxing raises the stakes: surgery, steroids, sometimes what the board calls bone smashing. The same milieu’s blackpill collapses sexual worth to height and face; homemade scales measure canthal tilt and hunter eyes, and another figure that circulates is IPD.
On masculine TikTok from ~2022 the vocabulary leaked — mewing, timers, side profiles — and plenty of people use the name just for a skin routine. The same jargon also pulls toward moral ranking of faces and unindicated procedures.
Origin
Forum English: looks + the suffix maxxing (“max” a stat). Lookism.net, live in 2015, already had a Looksmaxxing board. The term circulated in the incelosphere before it became a hashtag.
History
In the 2010s it stayed on the board. During the pandemic and in 2022–2023 TikTok and Instagram pushed mewing, hunter eyes and mogging into teenage feeds. 2024 reporting (Guardian, mental-health clinics) ties the vocabulary to boys’ anxiety and hostile communities. Softmaxxing looks like ordinary grooming; the name still carries the scale and the forum.
How it emerged
The selfie and face ranking wanted a grind metaphor. Skincare and the gym already existed; what the name adds is treating the face as a game stat, with a measurement and a “max”.
