What does Otaku mean?

In Japan, an ambiguous label for an obsessive fan; in the West, a proud identity around anime and manga.

  • Circulation: high
  • Source language: ja
  • Translatable: yes

Definition

Otaku began as a jab — house (o-) + taku (you). In Japan it can still sting. Abroad it became a badge: the convention, the wiki, the opening discography. Weeb is the more pejorative Western cousin. The lexicon records both climates: caution there; tribe here.

Origin

Japanese, 1980s, popularised in the press after criminal cases that stained the word.

History

From a local insult to global convention pride.

How it emerged

The fandom needed a name; it took one that still burns in its country of origin.
