What does Weeb mean?
A Western slur for the outsider fan nested too deep in anime-Japan.
Definition
Weeb is short for weeaboo: a Western slur for the outsider fan who treats cartoon Japan as a homeland and looks down on the rest. Anime Japanese creeps into the vocabulary, show food onto the plate, contempt onto their own country. Searchers who want the Japanese word for a nearby kind of obsession land on otaku, which Nakamori coined in the 1980s — a different scar, a different gaze, born there. Some reclaim weeb among friends, irony included; when the label comes from outside, the tone is still usually pejorative.
Origin
Wapanese (wannabe Japanese / white Japanese) circulated in the early 2000s; Urban Dictionary logged it in 2003. In 2005 Nicholas Gurewitch used weeaboo as a nonsense word in The Perry Bible Fellowship — it came from a dream of his sister’s, with no Japan in the strip. The same year 4chan filtered wapanese and swapped in the PBF word. Searches sometimes hit Wario Ware, the Nintendo game; Gurewitch’s strip is the source the imageboard glued on.
History
From the imageboard the short form weeb spread the insult to people who never typed weeaboo: cons, Twitter, fandom comments. Part of the scene uses the label as a joke. From outside, the tone is still usually pejorative.
How it emerged
The West needed an insult for the anime fan that real Japan did not ask for. Wapanese was the racialised slur; the filter tried to kill it and ended up naming the type with the PBF nonsense word.
