What does Slow fade mean?
Disappearance on a ramp: colder replies, longer delays, until the thread dies without a slammed door.
Definition
Slow fade is the cut that will not own the cut. The person still replies, just less and less — three weeks of I'm busy until the thread dies. Ghosting, beside it, cuts dry: one day there was speech, the next a void. Mid-2010s dating lists already split that slope from the dry cut; The Spectator, on 3 September 2015, still mixed the two names.
Someone still feeding the hook with crumbs is in breadcrumbing. Someone who leaves speech and stays in the like is in orbiting. Some call the fade respect; some call it cowardice with Wi-Fi.
Origin
English slow fade, the slow fade-out of a scene or a light. In dating the slope became a name for an ending with no sentence. 2010s columns and app glossaries (Phoenix New Times and neighbours) listed the gerund beside ghosting.
History
From he's just busy the slope entered the app glossary. Hinge, in its 2023 LGBTQIA+ DATE Report, treated fizzling / slow fade as ghosting’s cousin — fear of the ramp. Cosmopolitan (2023) repeated the contrast: ghosting’s silence at least answers; the fade leaves the other person with the inquiry.
How it emerged
Hard ghosting was too much for some; the slope needed a name. Fade-out already existed in film; the app glued the ramp onto the text that cools until it vanishes.
